Quesnel has Nothing Gluten Free?

We moved here from Calgary at the beginning of this year. No new news to any readers. Since arriving I am regularly greeted with the question “How do you eat in this town? There is absolutely nothing local!” You can understand my confusion at this perspective as you follow the blog!

Today ( After a GREAT Steak at Mr Mikes – thanks to the FABULOUS waitress who looked into it and offered alternatives!)  I found several types of cookies, Bob’s Red Mill Gluten Free Oats and a wonderful collection of alternative flours, including wheat and corn free baking powder, at Karin’s Deli. From there we went down to the Quesnel Bakery and picked up several loaves of Maggies Gluten Free breads.   Some late afternoon grocery shopping at Save-on-Foods and I came home with some Pamela cake mixes, Ener G crackers and a ton of rice pastas which will go GREAT with the Mayacamas brand Gluten Free Pasta sauce mixes that Mother picked up at Aroma Foods the other night.

All in all I can find SO MANY gluten free foods in this little community that my bathroom scale is NOT suffering!  More importantly, I find store owners very willing to bring in the products that I ask for.  As the local banners are saying…

Shop Quesnel!   I am.

Printables Begin!

Well, I sat down and just DID it tonight.   And now it’s up for the world to see and use.  Our first Printable is posted on… yessss.. The PRINTABLES page.  Our Grocery List is available in PDF for you to print and use.  I look forward to receiving feedback!

Pancake Breakfast a Bust – at the seams that is!

I am sitting here in the cool afternoon breeze with the smell of bacon, beans and maple syrup still lingering in the corners of the Cabana.   The 4th Annual Pancake Breakfast was, if based on the mounded second helpings, a huge success.

  • Waffles
  • Pancakes
  • Marc Angelo Mild Italian Sausages
  • Bacon ( pounds!)
  • Baked Beans
  • Syrups!  Cherry & Blue Berry Topping
  • Icing sugar ( in a confusing-to-some sifter!)
  • Coffee, Juices,
  • HUGE fruit tray ( Thanks to Chris & Tina!)

The kids ran freely amuck!  Water guns, wading pool, coloring station and lots of friends!  They were all content to sit quiet with a Gator-Pop freezie and some Cabana Cartoons by the end of the day!

I over heard two conversations in two seperate corners explaining that there was no wheat in anything.  “You mean in these?” with looks of confusion.  When people can’t tell that the amazing food they are eating is gluten Free it make me very proud.

To those I offered leftovers to?   With mixed feelings I regret to inform you… There are none!

Missed the show but got the goods!

June? July? and Holy Carp AUGUST!

I drafted this post in June… Now it is the end of July and I am wondering what the heck has happened to the summer already!   Have I really gotten that wrapped up in life that I forgot my online world?   The answer is a gleeful  YES!

This summer has begun with some amazing gluten free finds.  The bakery in Cochrane has become a regular excuse for motorcycle jaunts and the saddle bag on the bike has officially been dubbed the Bread Basket.   If you haven't made the trip yet… DO!

The best compliment I can think of was watching a 10 year old boy sink his nose into the middle of a slice of their bread and inhale deeply.  "  It's BREAD!!!!"  He proceeded to munch on the morsel from the inside out.  Was hard to give him heck…  it's what I did with my first slice of this bread.

So here we are at the end of July.   Warm sweet evenings after rich sinful days remind me of Grandma's fresh bread.   The indulgent middle was ALWAYS the best part..
