I would have told you ” You are Crazy!”

self

I toss my boxes of sweet Oreos, bags of fluffy white bread and foil wrapped pouches of ‘made with juice’ Gushers on the conveyor belt. “It’s just food. It’s not going to kill you.” Five years later I catch a glimpse of the conveyor belt in front of me and sigh. Bulk section plastic bags twist-tied with numbers show off their contents of quinoa, brown rice flour, sunflower seeds and walnuts. more

Carnie Fare

Stampede Days, Rodeo Weekends and with all of them comes THA MIDWAY!   Twisty turny paths of screams and jostling children crammed full of adults with their heads turned up mesmerized by the riotous gyrations of metal caged buckets on steel frames.  The excitement is high and the pack mentality surges though the yards.  While all this excitement is what draws some people to the over crowded theatrical presentation, to others it is the FOOD.

Corndogs, salt water taffy, Stampede Burgers and deep fried Coke.  In the wholistic perspective you can’t really call it food but Mid Way Fare is what draws those who are no longer interested in the rides.  Deep fried, salted and sinfully sweet mouthfuls of eternally-bad-for-you AWESOMENESS.

Gluten Free Hell?   Damn Close!

It and Christmas are when I get to pining over the gluten free losses.  I LOVE Corndogs and French Fries over soaked in Gravy.  The smells take me back …  righhhtttt… back to the time I are one of the Midway double cheese burgers with fried onions right before stepping into the caged ZIPPER.  * Covers Mouth Quickly*  Yup.  Should have listened to my mother!

Today my Teen is heading down to the Midway with cash in hand and excitement sparkles in his eyes.  The first year in the pack without a parental unit in sight.   Sighs.  He does his best as a teen to stay gluten free yet not be a lepper in his crowd.  I give him coodos for that.  Today will be a challenge.  I am dropping him off and Tha Baby and I will take  a walk around.  I plan on scoping out the eateries and seeing what Gluten Free options MIGHT exist there!

Watch tomorrow for the scoop…  or Twitter today!

Can I drink Rye? Isn’t it made from Grain?

It’s summer. A perfect time for Blue Paradises, Mojitos and Mr. Mike’s Double Double Martinis. BUT Can we have them? Isn’t alcohol, such as Shmirnoff Vodka, made from grains and thus NOT gluten free? more

O'Hara Glare-a!

Living Gluten Free can be a grey and isolated experience. Being told that you will never again be able to lick your fingers after a sticky maple glazed donut is a heart breaking prospect. There are two things that turn this bleak existance around for me. more

I’m Six with Dad’s Fingers!!!

Darling Hubby and Father!

Part Two of Four – “I’m Six” Recipe

Dad’s Chicken Fingers

4 chicken breasts cut into 1 to 1 1/2 inch strips
3 cups of masa flour
1 cup of white rice flour
2 cups of wheat/gluten free rice crispies
2 1/2 tbls  rosemary
1 1/2 tbls ground black pepper
1 tbls  salt
1 1/2 tbls celery salt
1 1/2 tbls thyme
1 1/2 tbls oregano
1 1/2 tbls sage
1 1/2 tbls garlic powder
2 tbls onion powder
2 teaspoons cayenne powder
2 cups milk ( or Dairy Free Almond Milk )
2 eggs

Preheat deep fryer on high or 350 F.

Whip together eggs and milk in a medium or large bowl, set aside.   Crush rice crispies till powdery (not necessarily fine powder, chunk and bits are ok) place in a large bowl, mix in the rest of the dry ingredients with the rice crispies and blend well.

Dip chicken pieces into milk/egg mixture and roll into flour mixture. Drop immediately into deep fryer and cook for 4 to 6 mins. Remove, place on paper towel and pat dryer for excess oil, serve hot.

p.s.: as an alternative to “hot wings”, toss cooked chicken in hot sauce or buffalo sauce before serving. Serve with ranch or blue cheese dressing, and celery sticks for garnish.

I hope you can recreate this wonderful dish, everyone seems to like it….

Darling Hubby

Probiotics an answer?

I have to agree with Gluten Free Chops one point “Probiotics are not a cure for Celiac Disease, dairy allergies or the like. They simply make your gut a more hospitable place for natural digestion and bodily function.” Ultimately that is our goal. more

Gluten Free Pizza…and salad?

I was ecstatic to see that Boston Pizza now has a gluten-free section in their menu. Cue the heavenly music…I can order pizza again!! I don’t eat “junk” food often, but when I do I like to know there is a safe option for me.

So this past weekend I decided to order some delivery from my local Boston Pizza – a caesar salad and a gluten free peperoni pizza. I used their new online ordering system and made a note on the salad: “wheat allergy – no croutons please”. Type in my delivery information and click send. A nice little email is sent telling me the estimated time my food will arrive at my door. I think, “Great! A gluten free feast of yumminess is on it’s way!”

The delivery driver arrives exactly when the email told me they would. I pay for my order. I dance into the kitchen eager to open the paper-bag wrapped packages of sweet gluten free goodness. I take the salad out (because even though I’m eating “junk” tonight, I still want to eat my greens first!), and this is what I see…

I called back to the restaurant and explained to them the situation. That I cannot eat this salad. The girl on the other end sighed and said a new one would be sent out to my house asap. Another 30 min. after I hung up, my salad arrived and I gave the driver back the original salad along with the receipt. Not a single apology from either the girl on the phone or the driver. While I understand that this was a mistake, that mistakes happen…for anyone with a gluten intolerance/allergy that salad was dangerous.

The staff that prepare the gluten free pizza have had training on how to deal with cross-contact. So, in theory, those of us who can’t eat gluten should be able to dine from there worry-free. In fact, I’ve eaten salad and GF pizza from this exact Boston Pizza before…without a problem. My problem is with the lack of knowledge that many people working in the food industry still have regarding food allergies. If each of us could educate just one person about it…imagine where the Gluten Free “movement” could reach?

On a more positive note…the pizza was divine. It was cold by the time I was ready to eat it and I had to re-heat it…but it was delicious. The GF crusts are from Kinnikinnick and have a very sweet taste compared to traditional pizza crusts. Regardless of my poor experience this weekend, I will most definitely order gluten free pizza from them again. My only real complaint about the pizza itself is that I wish they came in bigger sizes (currently they only offer personal sized GF pizza). It would be nice to have a GF pizza party with The Wheat Free Family!
