Kohlrabi and Turnips!? Seriously!

Each Wednesday we set the weathered wooden box out on the door step and eagerly wait.  I seem to miss the event each time but MAGICALLY the crate becomes filled with lush seasonal vegetables.  Murray of Dragon Mountain Farms organizes and delivers to us these wonderful delights!  ( Yes, my boys call him the Fruit Fairy… but I don’t think Murray was fond of the title.  *evil grin.   Have faith!  It was a compliment.)   It is a perfect mid week inspiration!

The beautiful reliables pour out of the box.  Lanky green onions, buxom heads of leaf lettuce and ruby red beats get washed up and smiled apon.  The greatest magic of the little crate, though, is the exploration of foods we have never even KNOWN about let alone TRIED!

In Strides the dread-locked Kohlrabi and the oh-so-subtle Summer Turnips.   I had to refer to his weekly newsletter to figure out what they were… then I had to figure out what to do with them.  SUCCESS!

Scalloped Summer Turnips with Quinoa

Ingredients

  • 3 cups Thinly sliced peeled turnips
  • 1.5 cups milk
  • 2 tablespoons butter (Ghee)
  • 3/4 teaspoons salt, optional
  • 2 cups cooked quinoa
  • 1/4 cup fresh grated Parmesan Cheese
  • Salt and Pepper, Chopped fresh parsley, optional

Directions

Layer sliced summer turnips into a casserole dish and cover with milk.  Add butter, salt and pepper and bake covered till tender in a 350′ oven. ( here is where I was in a rush… Microwave for ten minutes, covered.  Check every couple of minutes and give a stir.)

In a separate bowl, mix together cooked Quinoa and Parmesan cheese, salt and pepper.  Layer this blend on top of the baked summer turnips and return to OVEN ( no microwave this time!) and bake UNcovered for an additional 20 – 25 minutes.  Sprinkle with parsley before serving.

My Boys LOVED this and hubby faught for the leftovers for his lunch!  4/5 stars in my world! ( next time, some fresh green onions with the turnips and more herbs in the quinoa!)

Summer Curses!

All winter we long for summer.  We dream and sigh over the warm rays of long off sun and the thought of iced tea in moisture dripping dripping glasses.  The tinkling of soft wind chimed as the vibrant dahlias sway gently in the breeze.

” Mom … my game won’t load…..”

” Mom can Ryan sleep over … again….”

” Moooommmmmmmm   I am bored…..” , “… hungry…”, “bored…” add infinite.

Ah yes, the reality of summer with children. For all I complain about school systems and the failings of the systems, I appreciate the systems.  Do I treat it like free day care?  HELL YA!   I respect those parents that home school more than senators!  My children would not survive a semester! So, yes!  I appreciate and cherish the hours my children are in school.

Challenges?

  1. Finding time to keep up on my writings and maintaining a train of thought!  ( Yes, it is all about me! :)   )
  2. Keeping enough food stocked in the house for grazing and meal prep while ensuring they aren’t wheat/sugar laden CRAP! ( Yes, that is my technical term)
  3. Reminding myself that I do LIKE them, ( not just love) these little mini humans.  That fun starts with ME. ( Dys FUN ctional… maybe. But FUN all the same.)

So that will be my focus for the next 48 hours.   The cool rainy weather IDEAL for a baking day.  On the list? Hmmm

Check back tomorrow for the official listings and recipes!

Summer Sweeeeet!

Trying to make kids sugar free is like turning a horse into a ballerina. Yes, lipizans can… kinda.. but it’s a hell of a lot of work and always just a ‘kinda’ state of being. That said.. there has been some successes there too. more

November Beginnings Meal Plan

Well, the cold season begins in ALL senses of the word.  The Unleashed is home sick from school today.  So with the smell of his favorite Blueberry Tea steeping and the sound of both of us sniffling,  he is helping me Blog and plan.  On our minds?  Suppers of course!

The Unleashed’s “What’s for 5 Suppers ” this week?

  1. WF Hot dogs.  Buns? Romaine Lettuce leaves instead!
  2. Warm Spinach Salad - bacon, spinach , red onions, Renee’s Sweet Onion Vinaigrette (or homemade)
  3. Tomato Soup with Garlic toast ( We will be using Udi’s brand bread that we picked up at Save on Foods this week!)
  4. BBQ’d Chicken with mashed potatoes & green peas ( Sweet Tree’s GF Birch BBQ sauce for us!)
  5. Chicken Pizza & Green salad (Unleashed wants Catalina Dressing and we will be using Kinnikinnik Brand Crusts from Safeway or Green Tree Health Foods )

Supply for the school – Chocolate Cupcakes :

The teachers have been fantastic in keeping frozen cupcakes in their staff kitchen for the boys.  They are then able to pull them out when there is a birthday party or other celebration in the class rooms.

And the Winner Is…?

I tossed the names on pieces of paper into a toque ( how Canadian of me!), tried to do a drum roll, ( my 13 year old is way better at it than his VERY WHITE mother!) and the six year old drew the name! Should I announce it on Monday? more

How about I help pay for your groceries?

Daren ( the manager of our local Safeway ) wants to help spread the awareness of Gluten Free eating. To do so he has given me a $25 gift card to give away to one of my readers. aka one of YOU!  So here goes.

List for me three everyday packaged/prepared foods available at Safeway that are Gluten Free and you will be entered to win the $25 card!

Yes, packaged or prepared foods! We already know that produce and unprepared meats are naturally WheatFree.  “Duh. It’s a tomato.” Says hubby, lol.  So read some labels and share with us the product, the brand name, and your star rating ( 5=awesome -  1=wouldn’t feed it to my dog!!!)  of three products.

Tuesday’s Lunch

What’s for lunch?

Spring Pea Soup with Real Cream from Knorr (Located at the $Store up on the hill.)

Toast! EnerG Brown Rice Bread (Safeway) Not as good as the Soft White Rice Loaf but good toasted and dipped!

Oh, and of course the evil Diet Coke.  JUST 1!

Why am I doing this Blogging thing?

It certainly is not to get rich! Heck even get paid!

It’s not to get free product. I don’t believe in soliciting.

It’s not for fame or glory. ( seriously? * rolls eyes*)

Every now and then I do need to remind myself why I AM doing this though! more
